Wael Eskander and Jasmine Erkan: Investigation Is A Mindset

What makes a good investigation? Good investigators. But what do good investigators have that others don't? Spoiler alert, it takes an investigative mindset. Join Wael Eskander and Jasmine Erkan from Tactical Tech's Exposing the Invisible project to uncover the elements of an investigation, the importance of good evidence and crucial safety practices to protect your identity and data.

The session explores making the concept of investigation more accessible, framing it as a process grounded in curiosity, critical thinking, and persistence. Emphasis is placed on the idea that investigative practices are not limited to professional journalists or researchers; rather, they are tools available to anyone seeking to better understand the world around them. This talk covers foundational concepts including the nature of evidence, the importance of documentation, and the multi-phase process of verification, as well as the ethical and practical aspects of maintaining digital, physical, and psychological safety throughout an investigation—for both the investigator and those they work with.
