Riccardo Pravettoni: What Makes A Good Map? (Not A New Tool)
Drought in the Suez canal, war in Ukraine, Gaza and Lebanon, the Houthis attacks to vessels in the Bab Al-Mandab strait, European sanctions on Russian oil, intensified hurricanes crossing the oceans, the resurgence of piracy along the Somalian coasts and the strait of Malacca, Chinese ambitions over Taiwan, the establishment of a new Arctic route– all elements of disruption passing through the world’s main maritime routes. How to show the complexity of such intertwined events and their effects? What kind of processes lie behind the production and the visualisation of this sort of information? In short: how to turn all this into a map (a good one)?
